Choreophobia (Work in progress)
The context of the work surrounds the intervening occurence of colonialism and Western thought on Middle Eastern dance, and its interference on the censoring and transformation of gender and sensuality in male bodies. The title of the work and the project itself is underpinned by dancer and choreographer Anthony Shay’s theory of Choreophobia, a term which explores Western influence on Eastern dance and its infliction of a phobia towards transgressive gender behaviour, eventually resulting in the manipulation toward gender normativity through dance.
